The Beatles: Formed in the northern England port of Liverpool, the Beatles combined elements of pop, rock, and R&B with original songwriting as they transformed the music industry. The quartet existed from 1960-70, and was most famously comprised of John Lennon guitar and vocals), Paul McCartney (bass and vocals), George Harrison (guitar and vocals), and Ringo Starr (drums and vocals). Lennon and McCartney were the primary songwriters.

The Beatles are the best-selling music act of all time, with estimated sales of over 600 million units worldwide. They are the most successful act in the history of the US Billboard and UK Albums charts. The were awarded 7 Grammy Awards, 4 Brit Awards, and an Academy Award. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and in 1999, named among the "20th century's 100 most important people" by Time magazine.
