Jan 1 Glassblower Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit proposes system for making thermometers and the Fahrenheit temperature scale in a paper to the Royal Society of London and is elected a fellow on its basis

  • Jan 14 Spanish King Philip V abdicates throne, in favor of his son 17 year old son Louis; returns to rule in September when Louis dies of smallbox

Russian Academy of Sciences

Jan 28 The Russian Academy of Sciences founded in St. Petersburg by Peter the Great, and implemented in a Senate decree. Called St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences until 1917.
